Intermediate Macroeconomics 5 credits

Course content

Understanding the mechanisms that drive aggregate economic outcomes is essential for analysing long-term growth, inflation, unemployment, and short-run fluctuations. This course advances your knowledge of macroeconomics by introducing formal models that explain observed economic patterns and help you interpret policy challenges faced by governments and central banks. The course develops the analytical tools of modern macroeconomics for studying both long-run and short-run dynamics. You will work with mathematical and graphical models to examine topics such as economic growth and productivity, labour market equilibrium, inflation and expectations, and business cycles driven by demand and supply shocks. The course also explores the transmission mechanisms of fiscal and monetary policy. Throughout, theory is linked to empirical evidence and real-world policy debates to demonstrate how models are tested and applied in practice. After completing the course, you will be able to formulate and analyse macroeconomic models, interpret economic data through a theoretical lens, and evaluate the likely effects of policy interventions under different assumptions. The course strengthens your analytical and critical thinking and prepares you for more advanced studies in macroeconomics and related fields, contributing to the programme’s broader goals of structured economic reasoning and informed decision-making in an international context.
