Proposal to reject Jönköping University's application to award dentistry degrees

In spring 2024, Jönköping University (JU) submitted an application to the Swedish government for the right to award dentistry degrees. The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) was asked to issue a statement and is now recommending that the government reject the application.

Despite this setback, JU will continue to develop its Centre for Odontology and Oral Health (COO) in collaboration with Region Jönköping County and other partnering regions.

UKÄ appointed an expert group to review the application. Their assessment was that, based on a number of assessment criteria, Jönköping University does not have the prerequisites required to offer a degree in dentistry. UKÄ agrees with the group's opinion and therefore proposes to the Government that the application be rejected.

"This is not the outcome we would have wished for, but we respect the review that has been carried out. After an overall assessment, we have decided not to proceed with further applications for dental education. I would like to extend a warm thank you to all staff and partners who have been involved in this process. Your work has been invaluable, and we will take important lessons into our continued quality work," says Catherine Legrand, Dean and Managing Director, School of Health and Welfare.

JU intends to focus on, together with the Public Dental Service, Region Jönköping County, further developing the collaboration platform and the COO center. The platform serves as a national node for research, collaboration, education and development in dentistry and oral health. The aim is to meet and strengthen future needs in dentistry and public health.

"We want to further develop our training in the field of health"

"Instead, we will focus our resources and our expertise on further developing our existing training programs in the field of health, where we have a strong tradition and a continued strong commitment to society together with Region Jönköping County and collaborating regions," says Catherine Legrand.
