Overview
Pathway Semester General is designed for students who want to strengthen their academic English and study skills while gaining valuable insight into university life in Scandinavia. This one-semester program focuses on developing the ability to communicate information accurately and effectively in English, with attention to purpose, audience, and context. It is also intended for students who need to gain additional proficiency in subjects such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry in order to meet the entry requirements for a university degree programme.
Students will build critical and analytical thinking skills and learn how to adapt language to fit an academic setting. The program includes a selection of elective courses, giving students the opportunity to explore academic subjects and gain a head start on their intended degree path.
Pathway Semester General is ideal for students with a higher level of English proficiency (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent at entry) who need to fulfill additional entry requirements for their intended degree program. These may include further development of academic English, mathematics, or completion of foundational coursework. The programme also suits students who wish to personalise their learning by selecting from a range of elective courses, allowing them to focus on subjects relevant to their future academic path.
In addition to academic preparation, the program also introduces students to Scandinavian culture and university life, helping them transition smoothly into their future studies—both academically and socially.

Programme structure
Course Structure
Pathway Semester General consists of one semester of full-time study, comprising 30 credits. The programme includes a selection of elective courses that support students in meeting academic and language entry requirements for follow-up degree programmes. Courses may be preselected based on the student’s conditional offer or chosen from a range of available options.
All courses are taught in English and are designed to improve students’ proficiency in academic English, develop subject-specific knowledge, and build familiarity with higher education in Sweden.

Each course contributes to the programme’s aim of enhancing academic readiness through skill development in communication, critical thinking, intercultural awareness, and independent learning. Course availability may depend on eligibility criteria or prerequisites related to the student’s intended degree programme.
Course Selection
After you have submitted your application, the Admissions Office will review your eligibility for both the Pathway Semester General programme and the individual elective courses.
You will then be contacted by email with information about which courses you are able to choose. In some cases, you may be required to take specific courses in order to meet the entry requirements for your follow-up degree programme.
Above, under Programme Content and Elective Courses, you can see the list of available elective courses, each linked to its syllabus with detailed course information.
Once you have received the email, you must reply with your final course choices. We cannot process your admission until your course selection has been received.
Please check your email regularly and respond promptly to avoid delays in your admission process.
After the programme
Upon completion of the programme you will have received:
- direct entry to a degree programme at Jönköping University
- the English language level in reading, writing, listening and speaking necessary for enrollment in degree programmes at Jönköping University
- the Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics levels, depending on course selections, for enrollment in degree programmes at Jönköping University
- acclimatization to Swedish culture making it easier to live and study in Sweden
- support in adjusting to the demands, challenges and expectations of Swedish higher education
In addition, at the end of the Pathway programme, you will receive a certificate of completion. Depending on your course selections, this certificate may demonstrate skills equivalent to Swedish upper secondary school courses such as English 6 or Mathematics 3c. Completion of the programme can lead to direct entry into a bachelor’s or master’s degree programme at Jönköping University, provided you meet the specific conditions outlined in your conditional offer.
