Please remember that you cannot apply for a residence permit unless you have been admitted to full time accredited university studies in Sweden and paid the programme fee. The application fee for a residence permit can be found on the Swedish Migration Agency’s website External link, opens in new window..

You will need the following documents when you apply for a residence permit:

  • Your Letter of Acceptance for Pathway (you will not receive a new letter after payment of fee)
  • Proof of emergency insurance (your Letter of Acceptance). See the information at ju.se/insurance Opens in new window.
  • Proof of extra health insurance (for non-emergency events), optional but strongly encouraged especially if you have pre-existing conditions.
  • Your paid invoice to prove pre-payment of accommodation and food (download from the invoice system).
  • A passport valid for the duration of the residence permit or the duration of the studies in Sweden
  • A bank statement in your name in English with the currency clearly stated, showing that you have enough funds to support yourself for the duration of your Pathway programme. The bank statement should not be dated earlier than 4 months before the start of the Pathway programme. For studies starting in August, the bank statement should not be issued before 1 April. For studies startin in January, the bank statement should not be issued before 1 September.

Please note that you can submit your application for residence permit (for higher education studies) 4 months before the date you set as the permit start date. You can apply for a permit that starts 1 August even if the studies start a few weeks later. In that case, you can apply for a residence permit on 1 April at the earliest (if you have paid the programme fee).
For Pathway Semester starting in January, you can apply for a residence permit that starts 1 January even if the studies start a few weeks later. You can apply for the permit from 1 September (if you have paid the programme fee).

Even if you have applied, and have been pre-assessed, for a bachelor or master programme after the completion of the Pathway programme, you can only apply for a residence permit for the Pathway studies at this time (as stated in your Letter of Acceptance).

The current maintenance requirement can be found on the Swedish Migration Agency’s website External link, opens in new window., about half-way down on the page. The Pathway Programme fee includes food and accommodation and the monthly maintenance requirement can be reduced according to instructions under "You must be able to support yourself" on the Migration Agency’s website.
