Nikki Savolainen is a PhD student at the School of Health and Welfare at Jönköping University. Her licentiate project focuses on the outcomes of root canal treatments in general dentistry. One of the sub-studies will be a three-year follow-up of root-filled teeth. All adult patients who, during 2023, had at least one tooth root-filled by a general dental practitioner at the Public Dental Service in Region Jönköping County, Region Östergötland, or Region Kalmar County will be invited to participate in the study. The aim is to gain knowledge about the outcomes of root canal treatments performed in the part of Swedish dentistry—general dentistry—that carries out the majority of these treatments but has so far received little attention in research. The other sub-study is a cross-sectional study based on data on root-filled teeth from the latest Jönköping Study, conducted in 2023.

Nikki graduated from dental school in 2022 and has since been working as a dentist in Region Jönköping County. She became a PhD student in February 2025, and conducts her doctoral studies part-time alongside her clinical work. Since August 2025, she has been working as a resident dentist in endodontics at the Department of Endodontics, Periodontology, and Oral Prosthodontics at the Institute of Odontology in Jönköping. She has previously published two articles comparing the cost-effectiveness of different dental treatment options.
