The employee and the employer each have specific responsibilities in the process of applying for a residence permit for visiting researchers with the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket).

If you are a citizen of a non-EU/EEA country and wish to work as a visiting researcher in Sweden, you must obtain a residence permit. You do not need a permit if your work lasts less than 90 days. However, citizens of certain countries still require a visa to enter Sweden.

To obtain a residence permit, you must:

  • Have a valid passport.
  • Have a hosting agreement with a research institution approved by the Swedish Research Council.

You can apply for a residence permit online. You cannot enter Sweden until the permit has been granted.

For more information on how to apply, see the Swedish Migration Agency’s website: Residence permits for researchers External link, opens in new window.
